Device ideas welcome,

hi i'm working on case #1163 (together whith @Holly and @Marko). We are looking for a left hand device for a child with a working thumb and four (short) finger-stumbs (see photo http://ibrieger.de/images/e-nable/received_287869582671893.jpeg).

It's similar to a case posted some days ago: https://hub.e-nable.org/s/e-nable-forum/?contentId=42674.

A thumbless design is needed, of course.

The best existing device we've found so far is this raptor reloaded extra: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2840414.

We see two problems with all other existing thumbles designs (raptor, flexi and so on):

  1. There is not enough space available for the remainig finger-stumbs of the receipients hand. Just extending the palm seems not to be very usable.
  2. The receipient has working finger-stumbs and we would like to USE them.

Another idea is to make a three- or four-finger knick-finger design, but the remaining finger stumbs are relatively short.

well the first question is: does he have enough to use knick style fingers?

secondly, there is always the option of modifying the raptor, or your choice design, to make them longer. of course that doesn’t use the fingers, but at least adapts them.

thirdly, have you considered bionics? the fingers might be too small to use knicks, but big enough to actuate small buttons on the top and bottom of a design, which would make the fingers independent. connect the buttons to an op-amp or a bipolar, and directly to the motors, to get the response time as low as possible, so you don’t get the lame slow movement most bionics have.

Thanks for your comments, alexander. I think a bionics hand is not an option in this case because the receipient lives far away (iraq) and there is no help from a professional on-site. So a simple device is preferred here.

@Erwin Rieger what about the Kinetic hand? There are several different palm variants that include one without a thumb and index finger. This may be an option.

@Erwin Rieger if you go to the catalog section of e-NABLE, you will see the Kinetic hand listed. Within the files you download, there is a file folder called palm variants. Let me know if you have challenges finding it.

has this issue been solved? if not, I could take a shot at modifying your choice of hand to have a bigger space for the fingers. with the current versions I don’t see a way to make them useful, unless you design a new hand with that purpose in mind.
